Carys Gallilee
Growing up in North Vancouver, BC and spending many summers on the Sunshine Coast Carys was raised with a love and appreciation for the marine environment. Starting as a co-op student from the University of British Columbia in September 2020 Carys worked in the Marine Mammal Ecotoxicology lab at the Pacific Science Enterprise Center (PSEC). After a year as a co-op student in the Brown lab and completing her BSc in Biology at UBC in 2022, Carys returned to work in the lab as a technician. As a technician Carys supported all ongoing projects assisting with sample collection, laboratory analyses, instrument maintenance, and training of new students.
Four years after her start in the lab as a undergraduate co-op student Carys is starting as a Master's candidate at SFU in September 2024. Carys' research will center on the often forgotten Threatened Offshore Killer Whales of British Columbia. She will use dietary tracer methods such as stable isotopes and fatty acids and archived samples to provide the first estimate of the Northeastern Pacific Offshore killer whale's diet. Following an estimate of the feeding habits of this group Carys will focus on chemical pollutant exposure to the whales from their prey.
