Elisha Okonta

Elisha is currently an undergraduate student at Simon Fraser University pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Biology within the Cells, Molecules and Physiology stream. Her interest in marine toxicology was sparked by Dr. Brown's Marine Mammal Ecotoxicology course, which introduced her to the challenges faced by marine mammals within contaminated environments. She is currently doing her Honours Thesis in the Brown lab.
As part of USRA last year Elisha gained valuable experience with various tools such as the Direct Mercury Analyzer (DMA-80) to assess mercury contamination in the prey of the Endangered St Lawrence Estuary belugas. For her honours research she has become familiar with molecular techniques such as qPCR to support studies assessing health effects in ringed seals in response to contaminant and climate related stressors.
